Appealing a ticket
- Before a yellow Violation Ticket is issued, request an administrative review with Calgary Parking. It can cancel a ticket only if it was issued in error, such as a data entry error, a signage problem or a wrong licence plate.[2] Official page
- Use the online form, one submission per ticket. It pauses the early-payment timeline. In person at the impound lot or by letter (400 39 Ave. S.E.) or fax (403-537-7001) doesn’t pause it until processed, so the fine can keep rising.[2]
- Don’t pay a ticket you’re contesting. A paid ticket is an admission of guilt, and only unpaid tickets can be appealed.[1]
- If the review is successful, the ticket is cancelled. If not, the payment schedule resumes on the day you’re notified and you have seven calendar days to pay the paused amount. Decisions arrive by email or mail, in the order requests were received.[2]
- For a yellow Violation Ticket, submit the online review form at least two weeks before the first appearance date, then call 403-537-7000, option 1. Calgary Parking can’t help once that date has passed.[2]
- After a Violation Ticket is issued, the appeal goes through Provincial Traffic Court: wait for the ticket, don’t pay yet, then attend on or before the first appearance date or request a court date by completing the yellow ticket.[1]
- Traffic Court considers compassionate reasons and special circumstances, and can reduce the fine, extend the payment deadline or cancel it. If unsuccessful, you follow the court’s decision, which may include paying the fine or accepting a conviction.[2]
Fines and common tickets
- Calgary Parking’s fines have three tiers: the lowest within 10 days, a higher amount between 10 and 30 days, and the full penalty after 30 days. Paying within 30 days saves up to 20%.[1]
- Parking longer than allowed, unpaid parking, parking in a No Stopping or No Parking zone, parking too close for safety (such as within 5 m of a fire hydrant), too close to a curb break, garage or driveway, or on private property without permission: $40 within 10 days, $50 within 30 days, $75 after.[3]
- Parking in an accessible stall without a placard or accessible plate: $200, $250 or $300.[3]
- Parking during street sweeping or on a snow route during a ban: $80, $90 or $120.[3]
- Parking a large recreational vehicle in breach of the bylaw: $160, $200 or $400. An abandoned vehicle on public property: $160, $200 or $270. Leaving a trailer on a public street: $40, $50 or $75.[3]
- Tags from other agencies, such as Calgary Police Service, Calgary Transit or Engineering Bylaw, aren’t payable online until transferred to Calgary Parking. You can still get the early-payment discount at the impound lot, City cashiers or by mail with a copy of the tag.[1]
Unpaid tickets, towing and good to know
- If a ticket isn’t paid, a yellow Violation Ticket with a first appearance date is issued.[1]
- Not paying, or not contacting Provincial Traffic Court by that date, can lead to a conviction, extra court fees and fines, being unable to get or renew your vehicle registration or driver’s licence, a licence suspension, towing if you have multiple unpaid notices, tags or tickets, and an arrest warrant.[1]
- A parking ticket doesn’t add demerit points or affect your credit rating.[1]
- Towed to the Municipal Impound Lot at 400 39 Ave. S.E.? The pick-up page lists hours of 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends, closed on statutory holidays, and phone 403-537-7111.[4]
- That page lists a $160 parking-related tow, $43 a day storage in the main lot and a $36 administration fee, plus any ticket amount, and says the estimate isn’t final. The lot is cashless and offers no payment plans.[4]
- The registered owner brings photo ID, valid registration, a valid driver’s licence and proof of insurance. A designate also needs a signed authorization letter from the owner.[4]
- Calgary Parking and the City don’t use text messages for ticket notices or payment requests. For tickets, call 403-537-7000 (option 1) or email parkingappeal@calgary.ca; the line is open weekdays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.[5]
