Street parking and rules

  • The free on-street spaces downtown allow two hours, and you can’t park in an on-street space again within five hours.[1]
  • Anywhere in Kitchener, street parking is limited to 3 hours in a row unless signs say otherwise. Camera vehicles scan plates to enforce these limits.[4]
  • All City lots and garages read your licence plate at the gate. Keep the plate clean, stop at the gate and don’t tailgate.[2]
  • From December 1 to March 31 there is no overnight street parking (2:30–6 a.m.) without an exemption. Each plate gets five per winter, requested online or at 519-741-2345 before 2 a.m.[5]
  • When the City declares a Snow Event (around 8 cm of snow or more), all street parking is banned, exemptions are cancelled, and cars can be ticketed and towed.[6]
  • Tickets run from $30 to $400, and cars breaking the by-law can be towed at the owner’s cost.[4]
