Street parking and rules

  • Every campus roadway counts as a fire route, signed or not: no parking or stopping. Fines include $40 for no permit, $100 for a fire route and $200 for an accessible space.[5]
  • Three unpaid tickets or a balance of $120 or more gets a car towed; for students, unpaid parking can hold back a degree.[4]
  • Accessible spaces on campus need both an Ontario Accessible Parking permit and a UW parking permit.[4]
  • Northdale and other City streets allow free parking for up to 3 hours unless signed; staying longer is a $42 fine.[7]
  • No street parking from 2:30 to 6 a.m., all year, unless you register online by 2:15 a.m. (up to 15 nights a year).[8]
  • On St. Patrick’s Day and similar events the City can ban street parking across Northdale and Uptown for the whole day, even for registered cars.[11]
  • A declared snow event bans parking on every City street and lot until the City lifts it.[9]
  • Renting a spot on someone’s property? It has to be on the driveway: Waterloo bans parking on front or side yards and on grass ($84 fine).[10]

Free parking

  • Lot X is free on weekends, from Friday at 4:30 p.m. to early Monday morning.[4]
  • 15-minute service spaces near buildings are free for drop-offs; overstays can be ticketed or towed.[4]
  • City streets around campus are free for up to 3 hours unless signs say otherwise.[7]
  • EV charging on main campus is currently free, though you still pay for parking.[4]

Getting there without a car

  • Ten GRT bus routes and the ION light rail (three stations) serve the main campus.[15]
  • University of Waterloo station sits between Phillip St and Ring Rd, by the Davis Centre and Engineering 5/7; Route 30 circles Ring Road every 20 minutes during the day.[12]
  • Full-time students get unlimited GRT rides with the U-Pass on their WatCard ($137.70 for Fall 2026).[13]

In public classified ads we checked on October 6, 2026, private driveways around Lester, Albert, Spruce and Phillip streets were advertised at $75 to $200 a month. On campus, students can only buy term permits ($254.41, sold out for Fall 2026) and employees $64.16 monthly permits. City monthly permits in Uptown run $68.12 to $204.44.[14]
