Parking in Brampton: the overnight rule, tickets and downtown garages

Brampton doesn’t allow parking on any street between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., or for more than 3 hours at a stretch, at any time of year. The City calls its short-term exemption a Parking Consideration rather than a permit, and caps it at 14 days a year per licence plate. Parking tickets go through the City’s own Administrative Penalty System (APS), not the courts.

The overnight rule and Parking Consideration

  • No parking on any street between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., and none for longer than 3 hours at a time, year-round across Brampton (Traffic By-law 93-93).[1]
  • Vehicles over 2.6 m tall or 6.7 m long, including any trailer, can’t park on a residential street at all without an exemption.[1]
  • A Parking Consideration exempts a licence plate from both the overnight and the 3-hour rule, applied for online at brampton.ca/ParkingConsideration.[1] Official page
  • It’s capped at 14 days a year per licence plate; the City’s page doesn’t list a fee or how far ahead to apply, so check the form itself before counting on either.[1]
  • A Parking Consideration doesn’t cover obstructing snow clearing or road maintenance, and none are issued during a winter weather event.[1]
  • It also doesn’t apply to an inoperative, immobile or unlicensed vehicle, or a large detached trailer.[1]
  • Call 905-874-2404 (TTY 905-874-2130) for help with a Consideration, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.[2]

Fines and common violations

  • Overnight (2–6 a.m.) or overtime (past 3 hours) parking: $65 first offence, $100 second, $135 after that.[7]
  • Parked in front of a driveway, or within 3 m of a fire hydrant: $100 / $200 / $300.[7]
  • Parked in a fire route: $150 / $250 / $350. Interfering with snow removal: $250 / $500 / $750.[7]
  • No permit in an accessible space: $350 flat. Blocking the access aisle beside one: $300 flat.[7]
  • Expired meter: $20 first offence, rising to $40. Obstructing a sidewalk: $50 to $100.[7]
  • Brampton’s fine schedule flagged a rise in these amounts from January 1, 2026; check brampton.ca for the live table if a figure here looks off.[7]

Disputing a ticket, towing and downtown parking

  • Dispute within 15 days of the ticket: a Screening Review, filed online at brampton.ca/DisputeThePenaltyNotice or by appointment at 5 Ray Lawson Blvd.[5] Official page
  • Disagree with the screening decision? Ask for a Hearing Review within 15 days of it; the hearing is virtual or in person, and its decision is final.[5]
  • Missing a Screening costs $60; missing a Hearing costs $100.[6]
  • Unpaid or undisputed after 15 days adds a $30 late fee; left outstanding 75 days or more, it moves to the Ministry of Transportation and can block plate renewal.[4]
  • A car parked against the by-law may be tagged and towed at the owner’s expense; for a towed car, call Enforcement at 905-458-3424.[8]
  • Downtown garages (City Hall, John Street, West Tower, Market Square): first 2 hours free on weekdays, then $1/half-hour to a $9 daily maximum; free after 7 p.m. and all weekend. Nelson Square and the George St. N. lot are free at all times.[9]
