Parking in Downtown Cambridge (Galt)

In downtown Galt, as in the Preston and Hespeler cores, the general rule is free parking for 2 hours. For a full day, use one of the free 12-hour lots or a paid lot. Street parking is banned from 2:30 to 6 a.m. all year in the cores.

Street parking and rules

  • The City doesn’t publish lot hours, and the time limits above come from the lot operator’s charts. Always check the posted signs.[3]
  • All year, no street parking from 2:30 to 6 a.m. in downtown Galt, the Preston and Hespeler cores and on regional roads, even where there are no signs.[1]
  • Regional roads in Galt include Water St, Ainslie St, Main St from Queen’s Square to Water St, Queen’s Square itself and Park Hill Rd.[5]
  • Overnight exemptions aren’t available on regional roads or on core streets with a 2-hour limit.[1]
  • From January 1 to March 15, no street parking from 2:30 to 6 a.m. anywhere in Cambridge. During a snow event you can’t park on any City street ($80 fine, and towing).[1]
  • Without signs, stay 3 m from a hydrant, 9 m from an intersection, 1 m from a driveway and 15 m from a bus stop.[1]
  • Away from the cores, residential City streets allow up to 5 hours in a row unless signed (a temporary rule since June 3, 2026).[6]
  • Parking in an accessible space without a valid permit is a $400 fine on top of any other fine.[4]

Free parking

  • Free 2-hour parking is the general rule in the Galt, Preston and Hespeler cores.[2]
  • Each core has one or more free 12-hour lots, which the City calls an economical option for people who work downtown.[4]
  • The 12-hour lots are Park Hill Rd. and Ainslie St. in Galt, St. James Church in Hespeler and Dover St. in Preston.[3]
  • The Hespeler library lot, 15 Adam St, has free two-hour parking.[7]

Getting there without a car

  • Ainslie Street Terminal, 35 Ainslie St S, is the bus hub in Galt, served by routes 50, 51, 53, 55, 57, 58, 63, 206 and 302.[8]
  • Route 302 ION Bus runs from Ainslie Terminal to Fairway Station on the ION line, via Cambridge Centre and Sportsworld, about every 15 minutes through most of the weekday.[9]
  • There’s no ION light rail in Cambridge yet. The extension to downtown Cambridge was approved in November 2025 and is in design, with no opening date.[10]

City lot permits in the cores cost $65 to $115 a month + HST, depending on the lot’s zone and the permit type. Each permit is for one lot, and full lots have a waiting list. Or rent a private driveway by the month; Parkeas hosts in Cambridge can list theirs.[4]

Is parking free in downtown Cambridge?

Mostly, for short stays: free 2-hour parking is the general rule in the Galt, Preston and Hespeler cores, and each core has free 12-hour lots. The Dickson St. and Mill St. lots in Galt are paid on weekdays.

Where can I park all day in downtown Galt?

In the free 12-hour lots on Park Hill Rd. (enter from Hobson Rd) and Ainslie St. S., or with a monthly City permit.

Can I park overnight in downtown Cambridge?

Not on the street: the 2:30–6 a.m. ban applies all year in the cores. People who live in a core can buy a residential lot permit, which covers overnight parking in their assigned lot.

Can I take the ION train to Cambridge?

Not yet. The 302 ION Bus connects Ainslie Terminal in Galt to the ION at Fairway Station in Kitchener.
